Zeke and his first hospital stay
September 11, 2015 was a day that started just like all of the others. We were camping down in Salem, OR while we were house hunting. The RV resort had a nice swimming pool and the weather was perfect at 91 degrees so for a swim we all went. Zeke just loves swimming but also loves to drink the water. He walks around the pool with his mouth open just taking it all in and laughing when we tell him to stop. We went to the pool at 6pm. We swam for an hour and half then it was time to get out and head back in for the night. Everyone got in their pjs and started to relax at home for the night.
Just when we thought we could relax
I was sitting at the dining table and everyone else was in front of me watching tv. Zeke was running back and forth making his usual noises and watching a video on his i-pad. Everything was normal until I notice Zeke stopped his running and was standing next to the table where I was at and he wasn’t moving. He was just looking off into space and making no noise. I wouldn’t have thought much about it but I saw how he was holding the i-pad with just a thumb and finger by the corner and still not moving. I got up to look at his face since he was facing away from me and bubbles were coming out of his mouth. His eyes were fixed and I knew something was wrong. I yelled at Adam to look at him something was wrong. He came over and tried to talk to him but nothing….he was pale and standing still. Adam grabbed him and laid him down on the ottoman trying to get a response but nothing still. His breathing was either barely there or not going…we were all very scared. I called 911 but with us being about 15 mins away from the hospital I told the operator to forget the ambulance I would drive.
Like a bat out of hell I drove to the hospital
We took off to the Salem hospital ….I drove like a maniac with my flashers on and flashing headlights to pass people. Adam and the kids are in the backseat of the truck and Adam was attempting to give Zeke rescue breaths because it didn’t seem like he was breathing. I pull up to the ER and grab Zeke who is only in a diaper and run in. He is tall and heavy for me being only 5.1 but I got in there and a security guard saw me and I yelled help he is not breathing! He grabbed him from me and back we ran into a room.
The room quickly filled with Dr’s and Nurses before my eyes. So many questions happening…and before I knew it they intubated Zeke right there. He was sedated…they didn’t know the magic dose so he kept waking up and they had to add more to sedate him. The nurses watched over Kiana and Kai at the nurses station while we answered questions and Zeke went back for x-rays. Adam didn’t even have a shirt or shoes on from the rush of getting to the hospital so they gave him a t-shirt and socks. The hospital is not equipped to work on kids and we got sent up to Randall’s children’s hospital in Portland, OR. I called my mom and sister and they said they would meet me up there. It was at 11:29pm I made a post on Facebook asking for prayers and told everyone we were being transferred to Randall’s.
Transferred to Randall’s children’s hospital
We first drove back to where we were camping to get a couple days worth of clothing, my camera, laptop, chargers and toiletries. We made it to the hospital right after Zeke had been taken out of the ambulance and brought up to a room. Luckily my nephew got a photo of him arriving. Zeke now had a 104 degree temp.
We are in for a long night at the hospital
My Nephew, Sister and Mom took Kiana and Kai home with them so Adam and I could stay with Zeke.
Here is is in his room sedated with a breathing tube and hooked to machines.
Resting peacefully for the night. More tests in the morning.
