We got the Blood Test Results for Zeke
June 15th, 2010
Tuesday we went to Zekes scheduled Dr’s appt thinking we would just be going over any changes we have noticed since we went through the fungal treatment, started B-12 and Probiotics. (By the way at our first appt she suggested we get him fish oil so he has been on that all this time as well.)
I walked in and asked if we ever got back the results from the blood tests or if we had already gone through them. To my surprise she had called my hubby and told him some of the results and he totally forgot to tell me and forgot what she said till that moment. Niiiiicccceeee I thought. 🙂
I sat down and she handed me the booklet with his results.
Food sensitivity and food intolerance reactions are much more varied than food allergy reactions and can affect skin, digestion, brain and development.
Turns out that he has moderate to high sensitivities or intolerances to:
Egg white, whole wheat, peanut butter, green peas, lentils and of coarse we already knew all dairy products. Up for the running come in Soy beans, spelt Gliadin, Gluten, Goats milk and egg yolk.
The kid friendly ADHD and Autism cookbook
Holy cow!!! The Dr reccomended an awesome book called, “The kid friendly ADHD and Autism cookbook.” Here is a quote from the book.
“Children with ADHD or Autism can have problems with their digestion, such as not enough digestive enzymes and/or leakiness of the intestinal lining. These problems allow partly digested food substances (peptides) to enter the blood, cause problems in the body, and potentially short-circuit brain funtioning. This can contribute to behavioral symptoms such as those seen in ADHD or Autism.
Opiate-like effects from problem foods can result in symptoms of autism, such as social withdrawl, inappropriate laughing, zoning out, high pain tolerance, and cravings for the foods that cause the problems.”
So in short when Zeke was eating a peanut butter sandwhich everyday for the last 2.5 years it was probably causing him to feel like he was high and that is why he craved breads so much! It made him feel good, zone out and all that jazz.
Taking these items out of his diet can cause him to have withdrawls similar to a drug addict. Isn’t that crazy!?!
It made me sad when I heard that I was contributing to this stuff all this time and didn’t know it. 🙁
Right after his appt we drove over to the Country Village store again and I found the The kid friendly ADHD and Autism cookbook ( only one there ), almond butter, and a bread mix to try in my bread machine instead of spending nearly $6 a loaf there.
We went home and I spent all night reading the first 111 pages and highlighting key points that are important. The rest is just the 212 pages of groovy Gluten free and Casiene free recipes. Wow I learned a lot that night. The book also goes over the other names these problem foods can be called in ingredient lists….very tricky! A MUST have.
Looks like there is way to keep living without dairy, eggs and wheat!
Do you have any experience with food sensitivities?
Tesha
If you have any questions about gluten free foods just let me know! I’ve tried out so many of them I’d be happy to share which ones are tasty or gross (a lot of them are). Many of the treats like cakes and cookies are expensive so if you’re looking for something for a special occasion I can let you know what has been a hit with us. Also I’ve gotten pretty good at finding some food in the ‘real food’ sections that are gluten free as well.
It’s so exciting that you’ve found things to help him and you’re seeing changes so fast! Go Zeke.

Thanks Tesha I totally had forgotten about you and gluten. lol. I guess when it isn’t about you or your family…it kind of goes in one ear out the other….now I have tons to learn from people like you! You never told me you had a blog…now I will be your follower. 🙂

I’m so glad I read this because I need to check that book out also! Nate was diagnosed ADHD several months ago and I always had a feeling it may be his diet because he does seem to favor certain foods and I still have problems getting him to eat what we’re eating at dinner so I can really relate to what you’re going through. He also has digestive problems, gets the “runs” and gets in trouble when it seems he doesn’t wipe well etc…maybe that didn’t need to be mentioned but you know…it happens and it’s important to me that I get him more help…or appropriate help because we’re giving him pills to correct his behavior when it’s probably his diet that needs changed! He even breaks out in hives! It’s this weird skin rash at least once a month so I also think it’s actually an allergy to something he’s eating. Hey, well get in touch with me please because I need to be more informed! TY!
