Failing at baking bread
Like a lot of people in the world we have been on a social distancing order and have been trying new things. Because I have made bread before years ago and decided this would be the perfect time to show my kids how easy it is to make your own fresh bread at home. I never thought I would be failing at baking bread especially with a bread machine.
Now I am no baker and hardly ever use flour so I keep it in the fridge to make sure it stays fresh and bug free. I found a recipe for my bread machine and got to work. I had an opened bag of flour that we used up for this first loaf. Put the ingredients in the machine and hit the start button.
Will it ever rise?
During the 3 hour process I peaked in a few times but didn’t see a pretty loaf of bread expanding like I thought I should. I figured I would just stop looking and wait till the end to see how it all went.
It’s Show Time
Meanwhile as the bread machine beeped at the 3 hr mark we excitingly went to see our fresh loaf. Opened the lid to be met by this really ugly looking blob of bread. Not understanding what went wrong I posted a live video on face book asking for other peoples recipes to try that will work better than this one did.
What went wrong?
Because I posted a friend soon commented that if my yeast or flour was old that this ugly bread could happen. I knew my yeast was brand new so I went to the garbage can and pulled out the empty flour bag only to see the expiration date was 2 years and 10 months ago. hahahhahahhahaha I laughed and laughed. I had no idea flour could expire!!!!
Who knew flour expires?!?!
So we toss the rock hard ugly loaf in the garbage and try again with our fresh bag of flour. A long three hour wait at midnight our second loaf was ready. Yay! This loaf was perfect and we all had a slice of warm bread with butter. It was well worth the wait.
Hey I always say you learn something new everyday!
Hope me failing at baking bread gave you a giggle. I posted on Instagram and used the hash tag #breadfail and a reporter from the Wall Street Journal asked to use my story. Here is it!
